Description

This is for :iconnyiana-sama: Nyiana-Sama's original character contest at --> [link] <--

His name is Kawakami Kazou ... or Kazou Kawakami if you want his surname second

Kawakami basically means river god, and Kazou means harmonious man or first male.

Since I drew Koji's Mother for the contest first, I felt I had to draw his father. That's him, what do you think? You can see where Koji got his hair from.

Kazou's Stats:

Name: Kawakami Kazou (river god, harmonious man)
Race: Human
Age: (when he meats Yahciil) 19
Height: 5 ft 6in
Weight: 165 lbs
Occupation: Samurai working under the emperor
Personality: Quiet and thoughtful. He is serious and sensitive. He always does what he can to give his enemies their last rights, respecting them in life and in death, understanding the importance of such respect. He is almost monk-like to a lot who meet him because he is so gentle in nature. His attitude in life is that one should not waste or take anything or any breath for granted... each one is a gift. He is aware of the mortality of all beings and doesn't fear death or hate it... but rather sees it as the inevitable journey that all must eventually take. He enjoys noticing the small things and pretty much never looses his temper or his cool... to the point of annoying people sometimes because no one can shake him. He enjoys laughing and being silly from time to time, but he never lets himself go completely, always keeping part of him mind detached and observant... just in case.
Special Skills: He is a samurai who specializes in the long sword and the bow. He is fast and very precise... or as others say, efficient. He likes to write and sumi paint in his spare time. (he is an awful cook though) He is also a great father figure and a good listener for anyone who needs a friend to talk to.

quick description of his story

He was on a mission which required for him to pass through the Samo-Yan realm (ask me about that if you want to know) when he encountered Yahciil, the Samo-Yan Empress and her envoys. Seeing his trespass as an unforgivable act, they prepared to kill him, but he kept his cool, looked directly at Yahciil and said, "I do not fear death, but if I am to die today, I request that I die at the hands of this lovely goddess I see before me, for if she is to be the last thing that I look at before my passing, then I shall die a happy man." I know, a little cheesy, but he meant it, and it worked its magic on the vain Yahciil, who decided that rather than kill him, he be escorted off of Samo-Yan lands by her and her envoys.

During this time, they got to know one anther a little and they were both intrigued by the other. He was enchanted by her fiery energy and passion, as well as her beauty and her power, while she was taken by his gentleness, his calm, and his sincerity... which she found refreshing. It was truly a case of opposites attracting.

After he was returned to human territory, they agreed to see each other again, and so began a friendship that quickly grew into more They married twice, once in a human temple, and once in the Samo-Yan palace. At first they were happy living in the palace, but he felt deeply out of place... in part because he was human, in part because she had other husbands at the same time, and in part because he felt that by staying with her, he was neglecting his duty... which he simply couldn't stand. He returned to the human realm, and she visited him regularly...

When Koji was born, the original idea was that he live with her and visit the human world with his mother, but trouble broke out in the Samo-Yan realm, and for his safety, Yahciil entrusted Koji to his father (Kazou) and so he raised Koji himself.

That being said, I hope you like the character. ^__^

I find the angle disorienting. I know you were going for dramatic, but I think you might have gone a little past that.

Great job on adding objects to the foreground. The drifting leaves give a sense of depth the image would have lacked otherwise. Great job with natural media. While the clothes are a bit 'pillowshaded' and the folds don't exactly make sense (a lot of them feel like you put them in for the sake of having a whole bunch of folds), it's still pleasant to look at.

I can't tell if you intended for him to be crying blood or if he's just got a big scratch or a red tattoo on his cheek, but if he's crying blood, that's a little silly, IMHO. Don't take that to heart, it's not a real dig at what you're doing, it's just a taste thing, and it never hurts to know what people in your audience are thinking.

The trees (the branches and the leaves) in the background could use some additional definition. More angles on the tree off to the left of the image would have helped make it feel more real.

A hint of sky near the horizon line would have helped anchor the sky and ground. As it is, you've got this kind of 'fog' effect that isn't really working.

Nice work, though. ++.
