Practice by manic-goose Practice by manic-goose
close up

I am making a manga, and this is the first character I am developing. His name is Kojisai Taisu. (Ko-Chan) If you want to see more of this character, this picture is part of a sequence of pictures featuring him. Feel free to use the link below to see more. This is the most recent in the series, but there will be a few more coming.

I decided that I needed to draw him in his Tiger Kai form, cause I haven't in a while and I realized I hadn't even colored him that way yet. So I did. That's pretty much all there is to it.

the story that goes with this

Ryu walked into the empty Dojo with a look of annoyance on his face. If the stupid kitten wanted to play tough, he was game. He secretly told himself that he would have to go easy on the kid, as obviously he had no clue what he was getting himself into. Kojisai was humming a child's play song to himself and each step he took had a little bit of a bounce. It infuriated Ryu to no end. This distraction was costing him precious time. "Alright, if there is no other way to get it through to you, then fine. It won't be my fault when you get hurt kid." He glared his hardest and most frightening glare. It was met with an innocent smile.

"Fair enough" Kojisai chirruped. Then the smile faded and he looked seriously at Ryu. "But remember the condition. If you loose, you'll allow me to travel with you. You'll stop trying to give me the slip, and you'll stop trying to chase me off with talk of doom and what-not."

"Right" Ryu was a little fazed by the change in demeanor. "the condition, if you loose, then you'll leave me be. I don't need any help, and I sure as Dragon''s Fire don't need YOUR protection." He got into position, and drew the blade slowly. A katana would do today. If not, he had several other weapons... hidden from sight. That annoying kitten won't know what hit him.

Kojisai also got into position. His stance was a defensive stance, but his eyes had the look of someone ready to attack. Something menacing lurked behind them. Then he grinned. "It has been a while. I could use some practice. I hope you don't mind."

"Arrogant." Ryu spat. But before he could say more, there was a sudden shift in the air around him. Things seemed to be closing in all around, and then expanding. There was no wind, the light didn't shift, yet something... then he saw it.

"You are indeed." Kojisai agreed. "Very arrogant." His tail twitched playfully, and his ears lowered. Ryu took a step back in shock. Somehow, this annoying kitten of a boy turned into a tiger. Orange and black stripes, Keen ears, swishing tail, glowing eyes, and sharp teeth... Ryu wondered if there were retractable claws in there as well. "I'm ready when you are." It was a challenge, and yet the words came out as a purr. He seemed amused by Ryu's reaction.

"Fine." It doesn't' matter one way or another. I'll still beat him down. He told himself this, but his hands were shaking.

...

And so they fought...

Awesome work! Ah, manga writer/artist, eh? Same here.^^ If there is anything I've seen in your art so far that I haven't gotten at least decent at, apart from full image perspective, is making the shadows and folds in the clothing look correct. How in the world are you doing that?! I'm sure there are some poses, like this, that you couldn't do in front of a looking glass.

Well the trick is to have a strong understanding of fabric and how it behaves as well as an understanding of light. I have a very old how to on this... since it is old, it isn't the best, but I think it might help a little.
